How to plan routes using Apple Maps

If you're an iPhone user, there's a good chance that the map app on your phone is Apple Maps. The program is easy to use and has all the features you might need, but it can be difficult to discover how to plan a route using Apple Maps. I'll show you how in this article!

Enable Location Services if you haven't already.

If you haven't already, enable Location Services.

Location services are used to provide location information to Apple Maps and other apps, as well as your operating system.

Enter your destination and press Go.

  • Enter your destination and press Go. If you're in the middle of a journey, you may need to enter your destination. If not, simply press Go at this point and skip to Step 5.

  • At this point, Apple Maps will automatically calculate an optimal route based on which streets are open at any given time during peak hours (i.e., rush hour traffic). You'll see arrows indicating where to turn as well as estimated travel time for each leg of your trip—make sure these estimates line up with how long it takes YOU to travel across town!

See an overview of your route and customize as needed.

The route overview will show you the entire length of the route and the time it should take. You can use this information to gauge if there are any factors that could affect your travel time, like bad traffic or construction.

If you need more details about any point along your trip, go to “Route Details” and tap on a point of interest along the way. This brings up additional information including current traffic conditions, estimated time of arrival (ETA), distance and directions from your current location to each stop along the way. If anything changes—say an accident slows down traffic ahead—a red dot will appear on that part of the map showing how far behind schedule it is affecting them so you don't drive blindly into gridlock!

Save your route for future use.

Once you've found and saved your route, you can use it again by selecting the "Save" button at the top right corner of the screen. You will then be asked to enter a name for this route.

This will create a new saved route on Apple Maps, which is indicated by an orange icon with a white check mark in a box at the bottom of your screen. To view these saved routes, tap on the "Routes" button at the bottom left corner of your map view and select "Saved." You can now delete any unwanted routes from here by tapping on an individual line or pressing down on it for two seconds until an "X" appears above its destination point.

Share your route with others.

You can also share your route with friends, family, colleagues or anyone you choose. You can share the route directly from Apple Maps on your iPhone or iPad by enabling the Share My Location button. If you're driving in an app that doesn't use Apple Maps for directions, such as Google Maps or Waze, you'll have to export the route from Apple Maps before sharing it with others. To do this:

  • Open Apple Maps and find the desired destination or route (for example "Work").

  • Tap on Get Directions (if not already selected).

  • Tap on Share at top right of screen to bring up options for sharing via email, text message etc., then tap Send Your Route To Someone Else's Phone/Device."

Planning routes on Apple Maps is easy.

Planning routes on Apple Maps is easy. You can plan a route using one of the settings below:

  • Drive

  • Transit

  • Walk, run, bike or ride sharing (such as Uber and Lyft)

You can customize your route by choosing the following options:

  • Start time and end time of your trip. For example, if you want to go from home to work at 9am and leave work at 5pm, you would set these times as the starting and ending point for your trip. This way, Apple Maps will calculate how long it takes for each leg of your journey.

  • Include or exclude tolls along the way—it’s up to you! If there are no tolls involved in getting from point A to point B within a given timeframe then don’t worry about adding them into your calculation; otherwise it might be helpful for budgeting purposes so think ahead before selecting this option (or not).

With the above steps, you’re well on your way to planning more efficient routes on Apple Maps. We hope this has been helpful and if so, please share it with your friends!
